Steps that count

Do you know that it is recommended to get at least 10,000 steps a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle?  Many of our kids sure do know that thanks to Ms. Brzuski!  Here are some pictures from her pedometer club members!

Baby, its cold outside!

Don't forget to dress your kiddos in a hat, gloves, snow pants and boots now through April (well, at least until the snow stops flying!).  Kids without boots are not allowed off of the blacktop during recess and that's no fun, so don't forget.  My solution is to send the snow pants and shoes in a separate bag each day and my kiddo changes into shoes at the start of the day and then he's set for recess if the weather is good enough to go out.

Plus, because he had all of his winter gear, he was able to go sledding during recess earlier this week.    Kids in all grade levels were able to go sledding twice this week.  Kudos to Ms. Brzuski for making sledding an option for a recess zone!

Pedometer Power Club

Zero Hour Pedometer Power Club has started its 2nd session, involving 23 of our 2nd and 3rd graders.  The Club is an early start to exercise and our day on Wednesday mornings.  The kids come to school at 8:00 a.m. and we are involved in quick and FUN movement activities led by Ms. Brzuski.  The students were given pedometers to track how many steps they take during the club meeting time and continue to wear their pedometers throughout their day.  The program is developed to increase awareness of the importance of exercise and the activities are designed to increase the kids' cardiovascular(heart) strength, muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and create a positive attitude towards lifelong wellness.

In March there will be a sign up for 1st graders to have an opportunity to be a part of the Club.  Stay tuned for info.

Day in the Life: The Sunview Promise

Every morning, the children recite the following promise:

Sunview Promise

Today and everyday,
I will give all adults and
children respect.
I will try my best to be a
good person.

I will try to be friend to
anyone who needs one.
I will not hurt other
people's feeling.
If someone is being hurt or
bullied, I will tell an adult.

Everyday is a new day to
make good choices.
This is our Sunview Promise.

What a wonderful place the world would be if everyone lived by this!

Ever wonder?

(Part one in a continuing series to give you tidbits and insights into the Day in the Life of a Sunview Student)

Ever wonder how the Sunview Staff keeps nearly 200 students quiet (in the gymnasium!) as they wait to load onto busses at the end of the day?

They have a designated clapper of the day!  Each day, a different student is chosen to lead the group (yes, all 200 of them) with different clap beats.  Its basically an echo game where the leader claps out a rhythm and the rest of the group claps the same rhythm back.  Its very cool to experience this in person because all of the kids participate and are engaged.
