Star Helpers: Fun Food Fridays Update
Fun Food Fridays in February Food Drive
has come to an end, and an impressive end at that!! Each Friday in
February students were asked to bring in canned food for some well deserving
Sunview families. The response was overwhelming!! Sunview Helpers
collectively donated 757 food items!! That is amazing!! Mrs. Bell's
first grade class deserves special recognition, donating 87 food items, with
Mrs. Groudle's and Mrs. Zawaskis' classes not far behind.
We are so proud of our Star Helpers and
equally proud of our their families that are teaching them to respect and care
for other people. These are life lessons that will stay with them
forever!!
Way to go Sunview Helpers!

So we have not one, but two winners from that grade level.
Kindergarten: Corey A. and Greg R.
1st: Gavin N.
2nd: Hunter C.

Thanks to all for entering your cool creations!

Our fundraising is almost in the bag!
Have you checked out the Mixed Bag Designs catalogue and shared it with friends and family yet? There is a nice variety of products at many different price points. Think Mother's Day, birthdays, Swim team or beach outings, graduation gifts (the Hold Everything tote would be a great laundry bag for a college bound graduate!).
One nice feature of the bags is that they do not contain vinyl or PVCs, so you can breathe easier knowing that these bags, made of partially recycled polywoven material, are truly greener products.
A few reminders: When you take orders, remember to add in tax (7.75%) and (Sorry for this wrong info!) have checks made out to you personally. When you turn in your orders, submit ONE check made out to Sunview PTA that includes all of the amounts of the orders you've collected.
Orders need to be in by Friday March 9th and will be delivered after we return from Spring Break.

Carnival 2012- WOW!
This year's Carnival was a HUGE success! So many families came for fun and fun was had. We're still sorting out receipts, but it looks like this year's efforts raised five times as much as last year! That's incredible!
Thank you to not only to the families who came and "volunteered" their wallets, but also to the parents, students and staff who also gave of their time to pull this fantastic day off! There are lots of pictures to share, so enjoy the first round!

Star Helper Update: Food Drive and Senior Basket Update
SENIOR BASKET UPDATE
Thanks to all the students and
parents, our Sunview Star Helpers, for bringing in donations for our Senior
Basket drive. Last year, Sunview
students donated 10 baskets worth of goodies.
This year we blew that number out of the water and had 16 FULL baskets
to give!
The baskets will be distributed around
Valentine’s Day. If you are interested
in delivering a basket please contact Beth Lydic.
Our senior neighbors greatly
appreciate your gifts!
FOOD DRIVE WEEK ONE
Congratulations to Mrs. Bell’s Kindergarten class who
brought in the most food donations this week.
They donated a whopping 13 items!!
Don’t forget to bring in your non-perishable food items
every Friday this month to help your “adopted family”.
Thank you for your help in teaching our students to respect
and care for others!
If you have questions please
contact Beth Lydic.

What are those Box Tops used for anyway?
Why the heck do we ask for those little pink "box tops'? We send them in for CASH redemption a few times a year. Each little box top is worth $.10. Not much individually, but think a bout the amount of money its possible to "raise" without very much effort at all! You're buying products featuring the pink labels anyway, so make sure to send them in, and while you're at it, why not encourage friends and family to save them for you?
In fact, ALL of the money we "raise" with box top collection goes to fund teacher and staff grants. In December, the following grants were given:
In all, we gave more than $2100 away for these "mini" grants that will really make for great additions to Sunview. So keep those little pink labels coming!
As if those weren't reasons enough to send in the Box Tops, we sweetened the pot with a Pizza Party Contest. Here are the current class totals since the contest started in November:
In fact, ALL of the money we "raise" with box top collection goes to fund teacher and staff grants. In December, the following grants were given:
- 2 iPads- one for use by Ms. Brzuski and one for use by Ms. Bougambouz who will use it with some of our kids who are on the autism spectrum. As a total aside, if you haven't seen the 60 Minute segment on this subject, check it out. It is truly amazing to provide kids with this technology that can give them a voice when they otherwise may not have one.
- A one year school subscription to Brainpop. The subscription is for school use only, but check out the site and see if it might be a tool to use at home. They have family subscriptions available too. There is also a Brainpop App for iPods and iPads, so check it out.
- Books for use by Dr. Boyle as she teaches change through reading books to kids individually and as groups rather than "lecturing."

What is Star Helper?
Star Helpers is service based and geared towards teaching our children to care for and to do for others. Whether we are collecting food in a food drive, cleaning up the park or making favors for a Senior Citizen luncheon at the Community Center, we are helping our children learn to respect and care for others.
This month we are collecting items for senior citizens in our area. Please consider donating one of the following items in the next few weeks:
Individual tissues, notepads, Suduko and Crossword puzzle books, hand sanitizer, stationary sets, stamps, lotion, bath wash, individual wrapped snacks like trail mix or raisins, tape, gift wrap or gift bags etc.
There is a basket in the foyer of Sunview that is clearly marked "STAR HELPERS, Senior Baskets". You or your child can place items in the container and small baskets will be made and passed out to local seniors. The deadline to bring in items is Friday, January 27th.
Thank you for your help as we teach our students to respect and care for others.
Questions can be sent to Beth Lydic at Lydicfamily@gmail.com

Giving Tree: Support Sunview Families who need some extra help!
Opportunity to help Sunview Families who need a little brightness added to their lives
The holiday season will soon be in full swing. In the coming weeks, as you are preparing for your holiday meals, shopping for that special someone, and hanging those stockings - give some thought to those that may not be as fortunate. This year, we will be sponsoring some South Euclid-Lyndhurst families that are in need of some help from others. The Giving Tree is always a wonderful way to spread some love from your family to another. Starting this week, you can pick your star and make them shine with just a little generosity on your behalf. Here are the families that we are supporting this year and a few details about what would brighten their lives:
Family of four- Family “A”- Boy 10 wears size 12-14 just got a used DS, so any used ds games for boys would be appreciated. Girl 14 wears size 16 woman likes jewelry.
Family of Three Family “B”- girl 9 wears 8-10 likes art projects.
Family of Four Family “C”- twins, boy and girl age 5, Both wear size 7. Boy likes trains. Girls like dolls and Justin Bieber.
Family of four Family “D”- Girl 10 years old wears size 16-18 and loves to read (historical fiction, fantasy, and goosebumps). She's a big fan of calico critters, Hello Kitty, and Disney, specifically "Tangled" anything, and likes to make her own doll clothes. She has a game cube and likes Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda, and Sonic most. Both kids love art in all its forms, and go through art supplies like crazy. Boy 8 years old wears size 8-10 likes slot cars, matchbox cars (especially trucks and service vehicles!), robots, horses, swords, The Backyardigans, and picture books, particularly ones about trains, trucks, and funny creatures.
Family of four Family "E" - Boy 8 size 10, Boy 9 size 9, Boy 14 size 16. All would appreciate clothes and toys.
Family of four Family "E" - Boy 8 size 10, Boy 9 size 9, Boy 14 size 16. All would appreciate clothes and toys.
Food, clothing (new or gently used), gift cards would be appreciated by all of the families.
Important details: All gifts should be returned to the Sunview Lobby no later than December 20th. If you pick a star ornament, please write your contact info on the sheet to the left of the tree in the lobby and also securely tape the ornament to your wrapped package. If you choose to give a gift to the families without picking a star, please label your gift with Family A, B, C, D, or E and make sure to clearly mark on the gift who the gift is for (Boy or Girl). We are also accepting donations of clothing, food and gift cards for these families. If you have any questions, please contact April Vince.
